REFUSE IN RAILWAY CARS

Paper Bags To Be Provided On Limited Expresses

Another attempt is being made by the Railways Department to cope with the nuisance caused by passengers who throw fruit peelings and remnants of food on the doors of carriages. As an experiment the air-conditionsd cars on the night Limited expresses between Wellington and Auckland will be supplied with a quantity of paper bags. The bags will be hung on the walls between the seats, and will bear the following printed request: “Rubbish bag—Kindly place any fruit skins or other refuse in this bag for femoval by attendant.”

It was stated yesterday that some railway passengers evidently lack knowledge of the truth that they have less right to throw remnants of food on the lloors of carriages than on floors of their own homes. In the carriages they are expected to have some consideration for other travellers, who have paid for a right to a fair, comfortable use of the cars. F.ven the placing of metal receptacles for refuse in carriages has not checked the bad habits of careless offenders. Slippery stuff, cast on the aisles, is dangerous for passengers aud officials walking through the train. The Railways Department is seeking the co-operation of passengers in this effort to keep the cars tidy. If the experiment ou the Limited expresses proves satisfactory, similar bags will be provided for other trains.
