RECORD EQUALLED

High Jump By Wellington Man

ATHLETICS IN HATAITAI

A high juinp equalling the best previous performance by a New Zealander marked a handicap meeting conducted by the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre at Hataitai Park on Saturday. .E Phillips, who has been jumping at or near the 6ft. mark throughout the season, was credited with a leap of 6ft. Uin., equalling M. 11. Chadwick's best New Zealander’s performance last year. Recognition of Phillips's effort as u record was precluded by the removal of the bar before the height could be measured bv a steel tape. At the uprights the bur was raised to 6ft. IJin., but when the measurement in the centre was made the height was given as 6i't. Ilin. The probable help given by a strong wind, ami the absence of a surveyor to make the necessary measurements of the bar and the take-off, were other factors against the application for a record. Phillips made subsequent attempts with the bar as 611. 2in. at the uprights, but could not succeed. ■ • .

Other events drew good fields, and, despite the boisterous conditions', there were some good performances. Among them were a broad jump of 20ft. by a junior, P. Gallagher, Phillips's shot-put of 39ft. 10in., and a quarter mile by C. Robinson in 51 1-5.

Visitors were Misses A. and P. Wilson, Palmerston North, and IL J. Abraham, of the staff of Melbourne University, formerly a prominent hurdler in Wellington. Though be has not been doing much serious work in athletics in Melbourne, he showed that he has not lost his form by filling second place in both the 220 yards and 120 yards races. Detailed Results.
