TWO MEN JAILED FOR THEFT OF 2/-

Two men who were found guilty by a General Sessions jury in Melbourne recently of having, in company, robbed a man of 2/-, were sentenced by Judge Foster to imprisonment for one year.

They were Henry McLean, who said his correct name was William Blair, labourer, aged 37 years, of the Booth Memorial Home, Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne, and James Smith, who said his correct name was George Rich, salesman, aged 31 years, of no fixed abode. They had pleaded not guilty to a charge of having, in company, robbed Charles Lewes Carter, Canterbury, newspaper employee, at 12.50 a.tn. on November 9, outside the General Post Office, Elizabetii Street, Melbourne. , .

McLean admitted five previous convictions, and Smith 13. McLean also admitted having been Hogged for a similar offence. . Tile Crown case was that Carter was reading shipping notices on a board in the colonnade of the post office.on November 9, when the two men approached and demanded money.'When Carter refused the men said they were desperate men recently out of Pentridge. They threatened Carter who handed over 2/-, which Smith took, while McLean was holding Carter by one arm. McLean, in evidence, said he had been drinking. He denied that be had threatened Carter, or had spoken to him or taken money from him. Smith, also on oath, denied that he had threatened Carter or bad received money from him.
