Athletic Meetings At Hataitai And Petone

Followers of outdoor sports will have a wide choice of attractions today. 'j'be Wellington , Athletic Centre wi 1 hold a handicap meeting on Hataitai Park tiii.s afternoon, the programme starting ttt Another athletic meeting will be held by electric light tonight on Petone Oval, when the Wellington and Wanganui Amateur Athletic Clubs will meet in their annual contest. The athletic events will be restricted to representatives of the two clubs, but there will be several open cycling and athletic events on the programme. The cycling events have attracted the largest assembly of leading riders which has come together this season. The programme will start at 8 o'clock. ■fe Yachting.

Yacht races for the Cornwell Cup will start at Plimmerton today. Eight crews, from Dunedin, Wanganui, Auckland, Manukati, Taurauga, Plimmerton, Pareinata, and Wellington,, will take part. Plimmerton won the cup at Taurauga in 1931, and retained it at Plimmerton last year. After the Cornwell Cup contest, one race will be sailed for the New Zealand monotype championship, which was won at Plimmerton last year by S. Mason, Auckland. The race is sailed in Takapuna class boats with only one man as a crew. A race will also be held for the delegates. Tlie Royal Port Nicholson, Yacht Club will hold club races this afternoon. Evans Bay club races have been postponed because of the marriage this afternoon of E. Beck, skipper of the Idle Along Riptide. The Muritai club will sail races for the Haddington Trophy today and tomorrow at 3 p.m. • Cricket. The Wellington Cricket Association will resume its grade championship competitions this afternoon, when some interesting finishes should be seen in the senior games. Institute, with four wickets down for 227, will resume their game with Wellington, 220, on- the Basin Reserve. The first day's play took place on Kelburn Park. C. S. Dempster, who scored 127 for Institute last Saturday, will be an absentee today as he has been called from to.wn, but he will be available for the match against the Civil Service team on Wednesday, and will play for Institute in the next two senior championship matches.

Midland, with 103 runs on for the loss of four wickets, should be able to overhaul Wellington College Old Boys’ modest score of 212 on the Kilbirnie Recreation Ground.

University, with 43 on for the loss of two wickets, will have to bat well to pass Karori’s 328 on Karori Park.

There islio-uld be an interesting tight for a lead on the first liiniings between Kilbirnie and Hutt on the Hutt Recreation Ground. Kilbirnie, with seven wickets down, still require 41 runs to pass Hutt’® total of 14i2,
