ELK AND BEARS FOR NEWTOWN ZOO
Expected At Wellington
Today
The elk and bears for the Newtown Zoo. presented by the Canadian Government, are expected to arrive at Weltinfton today by the steamer Hauraki, which brought them down from Canada. Special quarters have been prepared at the zoo, and the animals will probably be released in them this afternoon or tomorrow. The Hauraki left Auckland on Wednesday evening, and is due at Wellington early this morning. She will berth at Taranaki Street Wharf. The animals will probably be unloaded at once and taken to the zoo. They will be turned loose in their new’ enclosures as soon as they appear to have recovered from the journey. The animals are only a portion ot the entire consignment expected from Canada before the centennial. Bison, beavers, and other North American animals are expected, and further shipments of birds and beasts are coming from the East and from Australia. Great improvements to the housing of tlie animals and the general layout of the grounds have been made in the last year, and it. is intended to make the zoo as attractive as possible, in view of the number of visitors expected during the centennial period.
