Exit Joseph Chamberlain From “The Dominion,’’ January 12, 1914. The Kt. Hou. Joseph Chamberlain announces that he will not stand at the next election. In a letter to his constituents he says:—"l cannot hope again to do Parliamentary work. The constituency needs a younger man.” Mr. Chamberlain’s health is not worse, though he shortly departs for the Riviera.' The announcement lias been received with the greatest possible regret in all circles, irrespective of party. His sou, Neville, is likely to be his successor, but Hr. Austen Chamberlain is also suggested.
What was probably a pioneer motor trip was made during the Christmas holidays by Dr. Simpson and Mr. E. W. Johnston, Christchurch. They left the city on Saturday, December 27, in two motorcars with their families, and proceeded to Greyiuouth across the ranges. Thence they found their way up north to Nelson town, ami from there across to I’ietou, and then south to Christchurch, via Blenheim, Ward, and Kaikoura, arriving hack on Sunday. The part..' are etated by the “Press” to be loud in their praise of the trip. They had a non-stop run throughout, and averaged one hundred miles a day*. The roads throughout were in perfect order for motoring, and I hough in places narrow and winding, there was nothing to stop a motorist taking his ear over them.
