MANAWATU TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Difficult Conditions

RAIN AND WIND FOR SECOND DAY

Dominion Special Service. PALMERSTON N., January 12. Glowering skies, rain and wind througbGloweritig skies, rain and wind throughout today played havoc with the second day’s play in the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championship tournament. Matches were suspended for half an hour in the morning because of rain and wind in tiie afternoon also hampered progress. Players found it impossible to strike form or to stroke with any degree of accuracy and the standard of play suffered considerably. M. Ferkins (Wellington), R. Tapp and J. Christie (Palmerston North) eliminated R. V. Hooper and R. Chisholm (Palmerston North) and the veteran M. L. Lampe (Wanganui I respectively) from tiie ranks of the men’s championship singles contenders. Lampe in particular gave his opponent a struggle in both sets, but Ferkins was not troubled unduly. Neither S. Ramson (Wellington) nor W. T. Pountney (Auckland), who are in the lower half of the draw, have been extended yet. The best match today in the women’s championship singles section was between tiie stylish Aucklander Mieg B. Potter, who iu a three-set match beat Mrs. J. H. Macdonald (Dannevirke). Though many winning shots off .each racket were sent astray by the wind there were some hardhitting rallies which made the match interesting. Miss Potter, however, was the more resourceful player. It was unfortunate that a change of umpires occurred near the end of the third set and put Mrs. Macdonald off her balance—difficult enough to maintain at any time in the wind—and several faulty decisions in a row did nothing to improve her game. She made a good showing in the second set but seemed unable to clinch matters. Misses N. Beverley (Matmnata), M. Symes and B. Potter (Auckland) will no doubt provide the highlights between them in their class tomorrow. Today’s results are :— Men’s Singles. Second round: G. Tapp beat G. I. Hutchison, 9-7, 6-11 J.
