SCHOOL FOR CHINESE
New Master Appointed
ARRIVAL FROM CANTON Chinese children in Wellington arc to have a new schoolmaster. He is Mr. Ng Pun Lup, Canton, ami has been brought to Wellington by the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Chinese Association to conduct the Chinese school in the Chinese United Mission building, Frederick Street. Mr. Ng is taking the place of Mr. Chieu Mun Chung, son of the Chinese missioner in Wellington, Mr. Chiu Kwok Chun, and hopes to spend the next three years in Wellington. Mr. Chiu, junior, was in charge of the school for some years and resigned his position at the end of last year. After seven years at a Chinese school in Canton. Mr. Ng, who is 32 years old, went to Queen’s College, Hong Kong, where he made a special study of English and Chinese, lie spent seven years at Queen’s College and graduated al the age of 21. Mr. Ng has had considerable experience as a teacher, and for the hr.-t four years has been in one of the schools conducted by the Chinese Government in the Pow On district. About 25 children attend the school, which is conducted between 7 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. The ages of the pupils, who also attend the ordinary State schools, range from six Io 14 years, and they are taught the Chinese language, writing and composition. As with tlielr English equivalents, these subjects take about six or seven years to learn, though to obtain a thorough knowledge of them from 10 to 1-1 years of study arc required. Chinese history and Chinese customs are also taught. The school will open again in February at the same lime as the State school-.
