RESIDENCE BEING SOUGHT
British High Commissioner
Efforts are s'till being made to secure a residence in Wellington for Sir Harry Batterbee, the first British High Commissioner to New Zealand, who is to sail from England on February 2. Negotiations in respect of one or two properties have been the subject of rumours current in the city, but it was stated yesterday by a Wellington estate agent who has the task of finding a suitable residence for the High Commissioner that the search had so far been unsuccessful. He gave a denial to a report that the lease of portion of one of Wellington’s leading hotels had been arranged. One of the most persistent reports is that a well-known Karori property has been purchased. When this was referred to the owner of the property he said that negotiations had been conducted, but no finality reached. He had preferred to leave the matter open till the arrival of the High Commissioner. The limit placed upon the purchase price of any residential property by those representing the new official, it is understood, is £20,000. Efforts are being made also to find a suitable residence for a member of the High Commissioner’s staff.
