AUCKLAND, January 11. rhe pairs event of the New Zealand bowling championships was begun today when 374 teams, divided into 62 sections, completed four rounds of section play. This comprised the main part of the pairs programme, as section play was confined to one day only. Tomorrow winners or those tieing in sections, numbering 97, will participate in a further day’s play on the sudden-death principle. The weather was good today but the strong wind which prevailed forced jonipetltorg to use good judgment. As tn former years three bowls only were used. . Of the 748 players who took part m today’s play, just over half were making their first appearance in the championships. Last year’s champions, It. L. Clarke and C. E. Tyrrel (Roslyn) are not defending their title. It. N. Pilkington (Hamilton), who won the pairs here four years ago with 11. G. Loveridge aS lead, is this time playing with his son, It. E. Pilkington, as No. 1. K. Cross, the English champion, is playing as lead for his father, C. P. Cross.
