DEFENCE OF WESTERN HEMISPHERE

Now The Business Of Whole American Continent

Received December 29, 1.10 a.m.)

NEW YORK. December 28.

Broadcasting from Lima today, the Assistant Secretary of State, Air. Berle, said that, as a result of the Lima Declaration, the defence of the American continent, which tlie United States of America had hitherto maintained through the Alonroe Doctrine, had now become the business of the whole continent. American institutions, beside territory, had to be protected. Stressing the need for avoiding a narrow spirit of nationalism, Air. Berle remarked significantly: "We cannot ask countries to sacrifice their European markets if we are prepared to close our own. We must do our share in establishing a practical economic system.”
