The Fairies
T’VE limited through (he tulips, where they hide their magic gold, And the lilies-of-tiie-valley, for the stardust they must hold; I’ve lingered in the garden, where the scented lilac grows, To see the fairy tailors sewing petals
on a rose I’ve crept into the meadow, when the breeze began to croon, And listened for their voices, as they sang beneath the moon; I’ve searched in all the bushes and the honeysuckle bowers, Where they store their precious perfumes and the nectar for the
flowers. I’ve looked among the petals of the periwinkles blue, And the orange-tinted poppies, for a
little silver shoe; I’ve sat beneath the willows, when the sun was going down. And leaned to hear their laughter, as they ran through Mushroom Town. I’ve waited by the lily-pond, when stars were peeping through, To see the fairy jewellers threading beads of twinkling dew; I’ve searched among the jonquils and the grasses velvet-green, And the lavender, all fragrant, where I thought they might have been. But I know they hear me coming, and although I’ve tried and tried, I can never find the fairies, for they always run and hide. —Original, by Sally, Waipawa.
