SCOTLAND’S EMBLEM
The thistle, once the sacred emblem of the god Thor, is said to have become the royal emblem of Scotland in this way: Al the time when the Danes were invading England and Scotland, night attacks were considered cowardly and caddish. But on one occasion the Danes decided to ignore this rule, and advanced in the darkness, hoping to catch rhe Scots' camp unawares. To make sure of absolute silence they approached barefooted. When they were almost upon the Scottish forces a leading Dane trod upon a particularly tine specimen of a thistle and let out a howl which sent the Scots flying for their weapons. They quickly routed the discomforted Danes, ami thereafter adopted the thistle as their national emblem.
