NOTED CRICKETER

C. S. Dempster Returns To New Zealand

SIR JULIEN CAHN'S TEAM

Mr. C. S. Dempster. the former Wellington mid New 'Zealand representative cricketer, who for the past'six years lias lived in England and who has captained the Leicestershire Comity cricket team fcl’or the past two seasons. arrived at Wellington by the Rangitaue yesterday from London. Mr. Dempster, who was accompanied by Mrs. Dempster, is a member of Sip Julien Cahn's team which is to tour New Zealand next year, and Ims arrived in advance of bis team males.

He said yesterday that the team Sir Julien Calm was bringing to the Dominion would be found to be a strong all-round side. It would be particularly strong in howling. J. E. Walsh was a medium-paced left-hander, much after the style of Fleetwood-Smith, but faster through the air than the Australian. P. Smith. Essex, was another slow spin bowler of outstanding ability, who. in Mr. Dempster’s opin ion. should have been played in the Tests against Australia this year in preference to Wright, of Kent. Watts, Surrey, and Lush, were fast bowlers, who could keep a length. Maxwell, the amateur wicketkeeper, and Goodway. were both able batsmen. The team was quite up to English representative standard.

Mr. Dempster said that Sir Julien Cahn did a great deal to foster cricket in Rugland by taking bis teams about Great Britain and overseas. 'lt was only necessary to say that Sir Julien was paying the whole of the expenses of his team’s trip to New Zealand and his only object was to let the people of the Dominion see some-good cricketers. Sir Julien was an outstanding personality in England. Mr. Dempster said he enjoyed the happiest relations with the people of Leicestershire. Sir Julien Cahn’s team will leave the Dominion for England on March 24. and Mr. Dempster will return with them. He said he was keen to play in Wellington cricket again before Sir Julien’s team arrived. Mr. Dempster was welcomed on arrival by many old friends and cricket officials.
