HUTT VALLEY SCHOOL PRIZE-GIVING

Highest Roll In History

The annual prize-giving ceremony of Hutt Valley High School was held yesterday. The chairman of the board of j governors, Air. D. A. Ewen, presented the ' prizes. ; In his thirteenth annual report the I principal, Air. J. N. Millard, staled that i the official roll at the beginning of the < year was 486 (215 girls and 271 boys), tlie largest roll in the history of the school. Au interesting feature in the enrolment : of new pupils was that for the first time ■ the number of girls exceeded the number of boys. He took it that this was an acknowledgement of the success of coeducation as practised at the school. Another interesting feature was the comparatively few pupils who had left during the year. The roll was now 435, a net loss of 50. In past years this loss hud been as high as 111. The small loss was not due to lack of suitable positions for the pupils to take, because positions had never been so plentiful. He did not think lie was exaggerating in saying that the staff had not been able to find pupils to take half the positions that find been offering. He thought the explanation was that the depression years were now far enough away for parents to take a more judicious view of (lie necessity for a sound education for their children. The Government was giving a lead in emphasizing the necessity of organized physical training for improving the health of the community. The secondary.schools had always realized that education without health was useless, and they had done excellent work in providing for the physical as well as the mental training of their pupils. Alost of the physical training had been done by way of Swedish drill and ordinary school games. This, however, was not sufficient, and it was being realized more and more that all this work should begin with guidance for every pupil by medical experts. This year, because of the generosity of seven local doctors, the school was able to provide for a thorough medical examination of all the boys. In many cases the examination revealed defects, particularly in the arches of the feet and in the spine, that could be corrected by proper remedial exercises. In a few cases the examination brought to light weaknesses which needed urgent attention, and which would have had a very detrimental effect on the boys’ health if they had been left uncorrected. last week Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, Director of School Hygiene, arranged for the examination of the girls, but there had noc been time to prepare a comprehensive report dealing with the results., The examinations showed that pupils should be guided by medical experts right through their school career, and that linked with this guidance there should be a system of expert physical training. The board of governors had recommended to the Education Department that experts should be appointed to supervise the physical training in the schools. “I think the Government is fully alive to the position and that it will take measures to ensure that the physical welfare of the pupils will receive adequate attention,” said Mr. Millard.
