Germany And British Colonies
Sir —The statement of. Mr. Malcolm MacDonald regarding British colonies not entirely satisfactory. He says it: i not now a political question. M hat does this mean? It means that it was a political question, and., as Mr. Amery said, might mean one in the f “ ture ‘, f The British Government . has been weak over the matter of colonies. Men m British territory have been living under the fear of a transfer of the land thev are living under British rule to Germany Though many representations w£e made to. the British Government by these British subjects, they re ceived no satisfactory reply. They were never told that they would not be transfe Their anxiety, and their anxious questipnings of the British Government were met with an ominous, a very ominous silence. Meanwhile they were subjected to Subtle propaganda by foreign Bowers. All the satisfaction these British subject got was that the British Government was determined to proceed with its policy of “appeasement.” In their own he they knew that there was a danger ot them being sacrificed for this policy of “appeasement.” To them “appeasement was neither more nor less than a crue -od who was demanding sacrifices and for whom they were to be victims. Personally, lam satisfied that the British Government had every intention of transferring certain British territory to Germany. The horrible silence over this vital matter indicated it; as does Mr. MacDonald’s admission that it is “not<now a political question. In the meantime, Germany, to show its pacific intentions, let loose that brutal pogrom against the Jews—a thing inexcusable, unwarranted, revolting to the last degree. This roused British feeling and British politicians were at last compelled, not very willingly, to bend to the popular feeling So the British Government has stated that the colonial question is not “now a political” one. It never should have been in doubt.—l anpetc., D. SUTHERLAND. Wanganui, December 9.
