MORE ARMAMENTS FOR ITALY
Increase In Expenditure Next Year
LONDON, December 14
The Rome correspondent of the British United Press reports that an Italian Cabinet communique states that, because of the urgent necessity for further developing and strengthening of armaments in view of the general situation, the total expenditure on armaments during the year beginning July 1, 1939, will be £92,000,000. This is in addition to £ 19,250,000 already earmarked for defence, which will be reserved for later necessities.
The army will receive £37,845,000, the navy £30,040,000, and the air force £24,115,000. The appropriations for public works, the mercantile marine, and communications will also be increased. The total Budget expenditure will be £325,745.000 and it is estimated that revenue will amount to £273,000,000. The current year’s expenditure on armaments will be £C4,430,0Q0. The Government has also ordered landlords, industrialists, and professional men to provide gas masks for their staffs before December 31. This decision is surprising, as gas masks in the past have been practically unavailable outside flie army.
