BOOKMAKING CHARGE

Hotel Porter Fined £25

A line of £25, with costs, was imposed by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, 'Wellington, yesterday, when Victor George Brewer, hotel porter, aged 58, pleaded guilty to a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle said Brewer was a night porter in a city hotel and for the past two weeks had been an agent for another bookmaker. When interviewed by Detective-Sergeant W. McLennan, Brewer produced betting material which showed that in one day he had received £B2/11/6 in bets. His activities, however, had not extended over a longer period than two weeks.
