WORK FOR THE WEEK

The Flower Garden

Sow anemones, aquilegias, candytuft, mignonette, pansy, primula and stocks. Aphis is troubling the lilies this year. Control this pest by spraying with nicotine sulphate diluted in soapy water. Lift-tulips when the-foliage has turned yellow, dry. and store in a cool, dry cupboard. There is still time to plant dahlias.

Plant out chrysanthemums. Plant out half-hardy annuals and sow seed for a succession of blooms.

Prepare plots for bearded irises. Lime them thoroughly and have the soil in readiness to receive new plants and divisions of your old ones. January is the best month to plant. Gladioli are beginning to throw up their flower spikes. They require a fair supply of moisture from now till flowering. Weeds are now growing rapidly and should be hoed up at every opportunity. The Vegetable Garden - Potatoes need frequent earthing up and occasional spraying with Bordeaux mixture. Stake peas and climbing beans. Spray tomatoes with Bordeaux mixture. Cucumbers, marrows, melons and pumpkins can be planted now. Kumeras can now be planted.

Earth up earlier planted potatoes and spray with Bordeaux mixture.

Sow peas for succession at intervals of three weeks. Sow beet, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower and onions. Thin out seedlings as growth demands. Sow radishes and lettuce at intervals to ensure a succession of salad greens. Sow leeks in deep, rich soil.
