WELLINGTON COLLEGE PRIZES

Presentation Ceremony

ADDRESS ON PUBLIC LEADERSHIP

Prizes awarded for the year to pupils of Wellington College were presented in the college memorial hall last night. There was a large gathering of parents and other guests, including the mayor of Wellington. Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, the president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, Mr. P. E. Pattrick, and members of the Board of Governors of the Wellington Colleges. The mayor of Masterton, Mr. T. Jordan, addressed the gathering, and the prizes were presented by Mrs. Jordan. . The chairman of the Wellington Colleges Board of Governors, Mr. L. S. II • McKenzie, welcomed the guests and read a number of apologies of absence, which included those from Sir Michael Myers, Chief Justice, and Lady Myers, the Minister of Education, Mr. Fraser, and the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones. He mentioned that Mr. T. Jordan, who was to deliver an address, was an old boy, a former dux of the school, and also a former master. The annual report of the headmaster, Mr. IV. A. Armour, was circulated, and Mr. Armour touched briefly on a number of points arising from- tlie report. His remarks are reported separately.

Preparing for Public Leadership.

Mr Jordan devoted the main part of hi’s address to the necessity for young men to prepare themselves for leadership in the affairs of the State. Everything today seemed to be in a state of chaos, be said, but he believed that from it a new order would be evolved. What it turned out'to be depended largely on the boys now at school. He urged upon them the need for taking an interest in government. There was a great deal of spiritual value in the willingness of young men to devote themselves to the service of the State. If the democratic form of government was to that willingness would have to be regarded as a normal state of mind. That any sort of stigma should attach to politicians, and even the stigma of dishonesty sometimes did, was a strange commentary on the times. He meant by government that wide field which included every influence on the life of the individual. It was therefore essential that the individual should know what was going on around him. The State had a right to some return for the education! it provided. The older men were handing on their heritage, their honour, and all their hopes for the future. The boys must- put their duty first and think of their rights afterward. The leadership required by the democratic form of government was that of faith and character. With the boys lay the leadership of the future. There was, he knew, a good deal wrong with the civilization of the day, yot they must be careful not to throw away the gains hardly won. They must receive the light, as their school motto said, and point the way to the wandering people of the Dominion. Music was played by the college orchestra during the evening, and the boys were hdird in some of the school songs. List of Prizes. The list of prizes was as follows: I—Special Prizes.
