GARDEN PARTY
Wellington Girls' College
The garden party at the Wellington I Girls’ College on Saturday afternoon was the most successful of any that have been held there for some years. The president, Mrs. lan Mackay, and members of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Parents’ Association organized the event which' it was planned to have in the college grounds, but which took place indoors owing to the boisterous wind. The Assembly Hall was fully taxed to cope with the large attendance.
The convenors for the stalls were: Novelty, Mesdames Morgan and Burnett; book, Mrs. Kay; sweets, Mrs. Temple White; ices and drinks, Mrs. McCormick; produce and flowers, Mesdames Clark and Johns; cake, Mrs. Wallace; fish pond, Mr. Clark; afternoon tea, Mrs. McCrea; paddy* market (prefects), Ngara Mackay. The garden party was opened by the Minister of Education, Mr. Praser who, following his reception by a guard of honour composed of girls in Highland costume, was piped in by Piper Stewart. Mr. Fraser expressed regret that the gathering was not being held as a means of celebrating the opening of the new college, which had long been promised and which, he hoped, would become a reality in the near future. He explained the difficulties, represented chiefly by the acquisition of fresh, property, which at present stood in the way. Every effort was being made to find a solution of the problem, and he had every confidence that that solution would be found. After an inspection of the wellstocked stalls, the official party were entertained at afternoon tea, the guests including: The Minister of Education and Mrs. Fraser, Mr. Chapman, M.P.. Canon and Mrs. D. J. Davies, Miss'E. M. North (principal), Mr. and
Mrs. T. Hillrs, Mr. Lewis (association secretary), Mesdames Holland, Urquhart, McCormick, Ollier, Mackay, Misses Ward, Robson and Kershaw. Highland dancing was staged by the pupils of Miss Burnette, and the college pupils were seen in two effective drill and dance displays. Going Abroad Mrs. Bercy Elworthy, South Canterbury, will leave with her husband by the Rangitata from Auckland ibis week, en route to England.
