JAIL FOR 14 DAYS
Intoxicated Motorist
For being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car in Dufferin Street on Saturday, Magnus William Thompson, farmer, was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment by Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, ’Wellington, yesterday. His licence was cancelled and he was prohibited from obtaining another for nine months. He pleaded guilty to the charge. Sub-Inspector D. A. McLean said accused was found by Sergeant McKie and Constable Kofoed lying on top of the steering-gear of a car parked in Dufferin Street at 6 p.m. on Saturday. After some difficulty he was driven to the police station, where he said, “I am offside; I know that you boys have to do your duty.” Counsel for Thompson said he had been assaulted by a man who had appeared in court earlier in the morning. After the assault-he got into his car, but discovering that he was unable to drive it satisfactorily made no further attempt to do so. There wore no mitigating circumstances in the case, said the magistrate.
