United Artists’ Attractive j Offering i SOME NEW PRODUCERS United. Artists are now entering their twentieth year as distributors of independently-made motion pictures. During the last twenty years United Artists have created a large amount of goodwill throughout the world through such producers as Mary Pickford, Charles Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Samuel Goldwyu, Alexander Korda, David O. Selznick and Walter Wanger. This year they have several new producers, including Hal Roach, Edward Small, and W. F. Keller. Mr. Bernard Allen, general manager in New Zealand for United Artists stated yesterday that the 1938-39 sea-i sun’s programme calls for an expenditure of 30,000,000 dollars on 26 pictures, tach picture being made as special in every sense of the word. “A glance at the titles and cast,” he said, “will confirm the opinion that United Artists still distribute only the cream of independently-made pictures from producers who are prepared to spare no expense to purchase the best of stories, are not pinned down to any time limit, and who spend unlimited capital to make only quality pictures. Alexander Korda, London Films (pi*oducer’of “Henry VIII,” “Scarlet Pimpernel” “'rhe Drum”), 1 will make only specials this year, including: “Prison Without Bars” (Corinne Luchaire, Edna Best, Barry Barnes), directed by Brian Desmond Hurst; “Four Feathers, techmcolour (Ralph Richardson, John Clements, Roger Livesey, Barry Barnes), directed by Zoltan Korda; “The Thief of Bagdad,’' technicolour (Sabu,* star of “Elephant Boy” and “The Drum ); "Over the Moon,” technicolour (Merle Oberon, Rex Harrison, Morton Selten, Ursula Jeans), story by Robert E. Sherwood ; “The First and the Last” (Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier, Leslie Banks) ; “Conquest of the Air,” a story of aviation from its inception. David O. Selznick, Selznick International Pictures (the producer of “David Copperfield,” “Little Lord Fauntleroy, “Tom Sawyer”), will give this year: “The Young in Heart” (Janet Gaynor, Douglas Fairbanks, Jun., Paulette Goddard, Roland Young. Billie Burke), directed by Richard Wallace; “Made for Each Other (Carole Lombard, James Stewart). ' Hal Roach (producer of Laurel and Hardy comedies, “Topper,” “Merrily We Live”'), is making “Topper Takes a Trip (Constance Bennett, Roland Young, Billie Burke, Alan Mowbray), sequel to “Topper”: “Captain Midnight”. (Margaret Sullavan, Brian Aherne, Roland Young), Australian background; “Water Gipsies” (Jean Arthur), story by A. P. Herbert; and a Hardy and Langdon comedy, the first from the hew team. Edward Small (producer of “Monte Cristo,” “Last of the Mohicans”) will contribute: “The Duke of West Point’ (Louis Hayward, Richard Carlson, Joan Fontaine), directed by Alfred E. Green; “The Man in the Iron Mask, ’’’ from the novel by Alexandre Dumas; “Kit Carson, the Avenger,” story by Evelyn ’Wells; "King of the Turf” (Adolphe Menjou) : “South of Pago Pago” (Jon Hall, Sigrid Gurie), a story of the South Seas. Walter Wanger, a versatile producer who was responsible for “Blockade,” “Algiers.” and “Vogues,” will produce “Trade Winds” (Fredrie March, Joan Bennett), directed by Tay Garnett; “Stage Coach,” “■Winter Carnival,” and “The Illusionist” (Charles Boyer). W. F. Keller will produce 12 “'World Windows.” These are scenic gems in technicolour.

All the above attractions will be screened throughout the Dominion in theatres controlled by Amalgamated 'Theatres, Ltd.
