WOODVILLE RACES

Fields For Today

CLASS HORSES ENGAGED

Form And Prospects

(BY

The Watches.)

Prospects of an excellent meeting are in evidence in Woodville, where the District Racing Club's summer fixture will open today, the concluding day being on Monday. Large fields of good Quality, with, in some cases, a dash of the best class, are engaged, and Keen contests are assured. The form will be of part.cular interest in view of the holiday racing, several of the horses accepted being engaged in important races like the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap, anti the Manawatu Cup. There was heavy rain in Woodville yesterday morning, but the weather cleared, and the track dried up well Prospects are for a fine day and good going. The Woodville track has a long straieht of over two furlongs?, and the tuit is always good, so that a true test is provided. Betting will be single Pool. Form among the hurdlers points to Porotiti and Ambition. The former has been racing consistently, and Ambition b third to Silver Sight at Trentnam was good form. Manawatu has not raced since his steeplechasing during the winter, ine Hawke's Bav stables are strongly repiesented in this field, and one or two should , be capable of making a prominent showin" The best of them may be Red Rufus, though Skyway and Sir Nigel may go well. Glenvane would have a better chance if the track were soft. . The Maiden field, as usual, is lar„e, but there is not a great deal of formt for the public. The favourite may be Ruatiti after hie forward displays in B eildnie, and he should be improved.. The track today will also be more in his favour. Golden Flame is bred to go fast, and Colonel Bogey has a reputation at puni. White Rajah may be ready to show improvement on recent form In the principal handicap the form will he interesting in view of Auckland and Manawatu. The likeliest P r ° s P ec ‘ s the pair at the top of the handicap. The Buzzer' and Big Dook, and there wdl also be support for Happy Landing and The Bigot This does not exhaust the p0..5l bilities, for Tidewaiter may stage a return to his best, and Hawke’s Bay form gives in the Nursery, and there is always the possibility of something good concealed fn those having their first race. Possible improvers may be Serenata and Mika ment, the former by Nightmarch fiom Praise, and the latter by Beau Pere. .Millament bad a race at the M ellingtel meeting, where she raced disappointingly. Kobi showed some pace earlier in tm. season, and Lutauist raced in Feildiug, where he looked as if the outing would go him good. The favourite, however, will no doubt be Submission, who tv on at Trentham in her last start, and is well Se 'ci°as's is represented by Courtcraft mid Smoke Screen at the top of the handicap in the open sprint, and though ueith. has raced since last autumn, f 1 may Show- up. for they are undoubtediy good; Strictly on form, however, the pii terem > may be for Gay Son. with ■Lucul.m? L.-u. and Joviality also well supported. Most of the others do not appeal, and horse-, like Quadroon, Lady Montana, and I am* shah are running much inside their usual There is a big field in the Borough Hack Handicap., headed by Hagen, woo is also engaged in the shorter race following. He is a horse that has to be respected wherever he starts. Naturai.y the likeliest form is at the top of. the handicap, and the lightweight division may not make much appeal. Outside the recently, well-performed hacks, whose form has-been fully revealed, the likeliest j mav be the Feilding maiden winner, Thrasos. who should be improved. In the hack sprint Hagen and Red Cat are the recent form prospects, but Kathbella is likely, and Viracious xias been working well in Hawera. Red M itch at her best should also show up. The form of Corroboree in J* eildmg will ensure him solid support in the Wharitl Handicap, and he will be suited by the tr-ick Last year he ran second in the big race to Lucullus Lad. . Flammarion attracted attention in Feilding by bis fine finishing run at the end of the open seven, won by Old Surrey, and on his own track looks a distinct possibility. Colfort is a recent winner, and Golden Pam might improve on her form in Levin. Glenthawn raced very well in Feilding over ■ the distance, and is a possibility. I Scratchings are Red Cockade in the l Hurdles and Machanui in the Borough Handicap. Icing and Golden Hawk are unlikely starters. The following horses may be supported in their engagements:— Manga-Atua Hurdles. —Ambition and Porotiti. Maiden Stakes. —Ruatiti and Goiden Bolton Handicap.—Big Dook and The Buzzer. . . Nursery Handicap. — Submission and .Millament. , , Oote Handicap.—-Gay Sou and Smoke Screen. Borough Handicap.—Hagen and IhraMangarawa Handicap.—Red Cat and Kathbella. ' .
