DUAL ENTRIES

Auckland & Awapuni NOTES AND COMMENTS Condition Of S. Wilson (By The Watcher.! Auckland Cup horses also entered tor the Manawatu Cup are Wild Chase, Argentic; Quadroon, Kena, The Bigot, Happy Landing and Tidewaiter. Roamin- and Silver River are in other events. Railway Handicap horses also in at Awapuni include Oratory, Laughing Lass, Counterblast, Race Call, Surmount and Dungarvan. Wilson Improving.

S Wilson, who was injured when his mount, Barabbas, fell in the Manuao Trial Plate in Otaki on Saturday, is reported from the Palmerston North Hospital to be making favourable progress. He has regained consciousness . and, though he is extensively bruised, it is reported that the preliminary examination did not reveal any broken bones. At the same time Wilson was on the seriously ill list over the weekend.

Did Not Suit Him Then. Arctic King has had one previous experience of the Ellerslie track. He ran unplaced in the Mitchelson Cup at the spring meeting in October, 1935. He did not finish in the first nine and the report of the race states“ Arctic King was always in the rear division, never flattering the hopes of his supporters.” He was retuDfieft to Trentham without racing on the second day. The track apparently did not suit him then, but that was three years ago, and he is a better torse now. Two for tlie North.

Most of the team of L. G. Morris have been entered for Manawfltu, but as The Buzzer and Disdain are missing it would seem certain that they will be racing in Auckland. In At Manawatu.

The reason for Baran’s absence from Auckland events'is seen in the lists for Manawatu. He has been entered for the juvenile races at Awapuni.

Jockeys for Woodville. The Auckland jockeys H. N. Wiggins, L. Dulieu and R. W. McTavish will be riding at the Woodville Jockey Club’s summer meeting next Saturday and Monday. H. N. Wiggins’s mounts will include Submission, Dynasty, Entail and Icing. Rider for Anopheles. x L. J. Ellis has been engaged to ride Anopheles in the Great Northern Eoal Stakes. The Two Cups. If Arctic King should succeed in adding the Auckland Cup to his record he will be .the eighth horse to win the double of the two Cups at Riccarton and Ellerslie. The previous seven winners were: Welcome Jack,"lBB2, 6.5 at Riccarton and 7 8 in Auckland.; gt. Hippo, 1892, 7.7 and 8.9; Warstep, 1914, 7.11 and 8.9; Scion, 1922, 7.10 and 8.2; Rapier 1927, 7.11 and §.10; Fast Passage, 1932. 8.0 and: 841; Cuddle, 1937, 7.13 and 9.0, Still a Mai lien. Coronation has the distinction of being the only three-year-old in the Auckland Cup and incidentally he has yet to win his first race. He is engaged in Woodville at the weekend and no doubt his Auckland Cup engagement will depend upon how he fares. By Limond from Jewel of Asia Coronation has been given plenty of time to develop, and his connexions have hopes that he will prove a stayer. Melbourne Cup Winner. Catalogue is an interesting entry for the Manawatu Cup. He is alsp engaged in the principal handicap on the third day. Debut of Duncannon. It is expected that the Awapuni-train-ed youngster, Duncannon, will make his debut in Woodville on Saturday. Duncannon is by the Paper Money horse Inflation and is bred from the Kilbrouey mare Kilcaunon, by Diogenes from Canyon. Reports state that this colt has been galloping attractively, and he is expected to give Inflation his first winner. Corroboree Improved. Corroboree should be greatly improved by the racing he had in Feilding and though he could not quite handle the turns there it should be possible to place him well in-Woodville in either hack or open company. He was twice third in Feilding. A Smart Juvenile. As far back as 1904 Mr. John Wren won the Caulfield Cup with Murmur, but of recent years he has not been in the limelight of Australian racing. However, in Wilson, a Siegfried colt, Mr. 'Wren appears to have a juvenile of more than ordinary promise. Wilson, who is from the Limond mare Lilock, was bought at the last yearling sales at Trentham for 1050 guineas by Mr. Charles Wheeler on behalf of Mr. Wren and shipped to_ Australia immediately. He opened his account a few weeks ago and has won again since, and Is reported to be very promising. His future racing will be watched with interest.

Wotan’s Cup Weight. 'Wotan won well in Feilding over a mile and a quarter, and though this was the first glimpse of form for sonic time he appears well treated in the Auckland Cup with 8.3, a drop of 21b. on his New Zealand Cup weight. Wotan was seventh in the New Zealand Cup, and uo one doubts that he can stay.

Comparison With The Buzzer. By comparison The Buzzer has received plenty with a rise of 81b. to 8.11 in the Auckland Gup as compared with the New Zealand Cup, in which he was beaten by Arctic King in the last stride. Arctic King has been raised 91b. On the other hand. The Buzzer was placed in the Metropolitan and was the winner of the last Auckland Cup.

Other Weights. Willie Win, fourth in the New Zealand Cup, has the. same weight in Auckland, and Argentic, unplaced, has been dropped 21b. Malagigi, a_ failure at Riccarton, has the same weight. 7.10. Another failure, Sly Fox, has been dropped from 7.10 to 7.3, and a risk has been taken here, for Sly Fox was injudiciously handled in the New Zealand Cup. Tidewaiter, sixth in the New Zealand Cup, is down 41b. for Auckland. Padishah, who has top-weight. 9.0, al Ellerslie, was fifth in the New Zealand Cup with 8.6, and won the Metropolitan with 8.8, The Buzzer being third with 8.11.

Riders from the South. It is reported from Christchurch that many of the Riccarton horsemen will be coming north to fulfil engagements. A. E. Ellis, who will ride Argentic in the Manawatu Cup, may be hack at Manawatu for the third. He will ride at Ellerslie and Willie Win. considered to have a chance in the Auckland Cup, will l>e one of his rides. G. H. Humphries will concentrate on Ellerslie, where the Clifford estate will have four horses. A. G. Parsons will accompany the other team from the Cutts stable, which is going to Manawatu affid Wairarapa. The ap-

prentice G. Watson will go to Manawatu and Stratford witli O. C. McCarthy. A. Leach is already in the North Island with Linguist, which he rode in Otaki on Saturday.

Always Hie Element of Risk. The element of risk that is always present in a jockey’s occupation was clearly demonstrated once again on Saturday. when accidents at meetings in both Australia and New Zealand resulted in well-known horsemen being considerably injured. In New Zealand, in Otaki. S. Wilsog, having his first ride since he fell with Rakahanga in the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton last month, fell with Barabbas in the maiden event and will be out of the saddle for some time again. In Australia in a smash during a weekend meeting one of two jockeys injured was F. Shean. the brilliant Queensland horseman, who has had a sensational run of successes this season. Shean announced a few weeks ago th/it he would probably retire from riding at the end of this seasou.

laiading Horsemen. The Riccarton horse-man G. H. Humphries is the leading rider for the current season in New Zealand, with 23 wins. 11. 11. Morris follows with 17 successes, and then come W. J. Broughton 15. R. W. McTavish 11, I’. Alkins 14. J. Chaplin 11. 11. N. Wiggins 13. L. II Clifford I'2. ami G, Tuttersall 10.

Steve Misses It. Sieve Donoghue has experienced instantaneous success as a trainer, but the urge to ride is still , with him. Al. a recent Pontecraft meeting, while watching the jockeys . being weighed out for a race, he observed to an acquaintance:—"l never look at the scales without feeling regret tlrat I am not to be weighed out to ride. I miss it all very much.” Answers tn Correspondents.

"Inquirer,” Lower Hutt : \\ hen Steetou won the Xew Zealand Cup in 193-1 she was bracketed wit'<t 'ough. "Squib,” Shannon: A distance in racing is yards, or 2(1 yards more than a furlong.
