TROOPS MASS ON FRONTIERS
Grave Situation In Ruthenia
POLISH-HUNGARIAN AMBITIONS
Possibility Of War With
Germany
By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright, LONDON, November 24.
A situation of the greatest complexity is developing in Ruthenia, and well-informed circles do not exclude the possibility of its leading to war between Poland and Germany and possibly Hungary. • The “Evening Standard” says that Poland, in conjunction with Hungary, is planning to seize the remnant of Ruthenia, and has massed seven divisions on the Ruthenian border, with 40.000 more Polish troops on the Rumanian frontier to prevent Rumania assisting Czechoslovakia.
Germany, which hitherto has opposed the plan, has now informed Budapest and AAHrsaw that, her objections will be withdrawn if, first, Danzig is freed from control of the League of Nations, becoming in effect a German city, and? secondly, if Germans are granted a concession to build a railway and a trunk road to the Rumanian frontier.
Rumania is anxious to preserve the boundaries fixed in the Munich Agreement, and has warned Britain and France of the plan. The situation is being discussed at the Parts Conference.
Meanwhile, conditions in Ruthenia are reported to be chaotic, because of the activities of bands of Hungarian and Polish irregulars. Guerrilla Warfare. It is stated officially from Prague that Hungary is concentrating’ troops along the frontier and that there are also minor Polish movements. - / a
The representative of the British United Press at Bratislava reports that thousands of Czech troops are concentrating on the I’utbenian frontier prepared to resist an. invasion directed toward the achievement of a common frontier between Poland and Hun'’"rhe “Daily Telegraph” says that bands of Polish and Hungarian irregulars drawn from the armies have created guerrilla warfare in Ruthenia.
It was against a sudden coup that a brusque warning was issued by Germany on November 23 to Poland and Hungary, while German forces are reported to be held in readiness to defend the threatened frontiers. Simultaneously, Czechoslovakia has requested the Munich Powers to implement immediately the promised guarantee of inviolability. In the light of the latest developments, the talks between Herr Hitler and King Carol are now more interesting. It is believed that King Carol declared his opposition to partition of RVthenia because it would increase Hungary’s power and the rivisionist appetite. Present indications are that Germany is dictating to Toland, on the Danzig problem. HUNGARIAN POLITICAL CRISIS BUDAPEST. November 24. Parliament has adjourned till December 1 to allow the political position to be clarified. A newspaper declares that the crisis resulted from the fear that Dr. linredy was contemplating a. form of totalitarianism, and that, he also adhered too strongly to the Rome-Berlin axis.
