OBITUARY

Rev. Arthur Harding, Lower Hutt

The Rev. Arthur Harding. Raroa Road. Lower Hutt, died at a private hospital yesterday. Mr. Harding was born in Ludlow, Shropshire, England, in .1861. He was the fourteenth child of a family of 16. As a young probationer of' the Primitive Methodist Church he went to Queensland in 18S1 and in 1.894 Miss Hester 'Whittaker, of Yorkshire, England, went there to marry him. His circuit in the bush country of Queensland knew no boundaries and his life was adventurous. His only means of travel was on horse. On one occasion he visited a settlement a day and a half’s journey away. At night be camped in the bush and had to light a fire to keep the dingoes away. Arrived at the settlement, he conducted baptisms all the morning and weddings all the afternoon. It was three years since the place bad been, visited by a minister.

In 1599 Mr. and Mrs. Harding went back to England, where Mr. Harding had circuits ..in Warwickshire and Hampshire. Tn 1907 he came to New Zealand, where -Mr. Harding had circuits in the North, and South Islands. He retired in 1923, but did work as a relieving minister in the following years. For many years Mr. Harding, who was the official chaplain for the Methodist Church of the Porirua Mental Hospital and ot’ prisons and hospitals. devoted his time to visiting these institutions and was tireless in organizing concerts and entertainments for the inmates. He was in the Wellington Hospital for some weeks recently, but although confined to bed he organized concerts for the Porirua Mental Hospital. Mrs. Harding died eight years ago. Mr. Harding is survived by one daughter. Miss Winifred Harding, 8.A., of the staff of the Levin High School. Mrs. F. W. B. Greville The death occurred yesterday at her residence. Brougham Street, of Mrs. M. M. Greville. widow of the late Mr. F. W. B. Greville, for many years proprietor and editor of the “New Zealand Dairyman.” Mrs. Greville, who was born in Nelson in 1858, had lived in Wellington more than 50 years. In the early years of her marriage, Mrs. Greville lived at Paekakariki when the Manawatu railway was being built and made frequent trips to Wellington over the old coach road. Later she lived at Pahiatua where her husband was editor of the “Pahiatua Herald,” and later owner of the pioneer butter and cheese factories in that district, at the time when settlers were cutting their holdings out of tlie Forty Mile Bush. Though her health had been failing for some time, Mrs. Greville took the keenest, interest in world affairs up to tlie last weeks of her illness. Mr. Greville predeceased her 15 years ago. She is survived bv her four daughters, Mrs. E. A. Buckley, Mrs. E. F. N. Morgan, Mrs. W. G. K, Wright, all of Wellington, and Mrs. L. M. GWynne, Auckland. Mrs. Mary Ann Guy The death occurred last night, of Mrs. .Mary Ann Guy, Miramar, Wellington. Mrs. Guy, who was in her ninety-fifth year, was born in Wellington, where she had resided continuously since 1889. Before that she lived in Nelson and afterward in Palmerston North. Her descendants, who number 100, include 21 grandsons and 16 granddaughters. Mrs. Guy is survived by four sons— Messrs. Harry Guy, Palmerston North; Foster Guy, Nelson; Crosier Guy, Wellington ; and Alfred Guy, Bunnythorpe —and six daughters—Miss Sarah Guy, Nelson; Miss Mary Guy, Wellington; Mrs. B. 0. Burgersen, Hamilton; Mrs. J. G. Newton, Miramar; Mrs. J. Love, Miramar, and Mrs. Leonard Hockey, Nelson. The funeral will take place at Palmerston North on Monday afternoon. Mr. A. A. Howden The death has occurred of Mr. Alister McDonald Howden, 64, former Auckland and New Zealand representative cricketer, reports a Press Association telegram from Auckland. He was born in Scotland and educated in England and at the Otago Boys’ High School. He was employed by the Bank of Australasia in Invercargill and later in Dunedin. For more than 30 years, however, he was a grain and produce merchant in Auckland, and had been a sharebroker since 1932. A,s a leg-break bowler he won a place in the New Zealand cricket team against Australia in 1910. Before the war he was a top-flight golfer. He leaves a widow and four sons, one of whom is lan Howden, a prominent cricketer. Mr. H. G. Carman 'L'he death yesterday morning of Mr. Henry George Carman, prominent in business and in public affairs in Eltham for 6 years, is reported in it Press Association telegram from Eltham. lie was elected the first chairman of the Taranaki Electric Power Board in 1922 and held office till his retirement this year, but retained his membership on the board as the representative of Eltham. He served for many years on the Borough Council, Chamber of Commerce, and other local institutions. Mr. Carman was a foundation member of the (bowling chib and a life member. He was born in Onehunga 65 years ago, but later went to live in Weiiiugton with his parents. Hi s wife predeceased him five years ago. He is survived by one son, two daughters, three brothers and two sisters. Mr. H. L. Michel 'l'he death has occurred of Mr. Ilenrv Leslie Michel, youngest son of t|ie late Hou. 11. L. Michel. Hokitika, aged 44, says a Press Association telegrant from Hokitika. He leaves a widow, his mother, two sisters and three brothers. .Mr. Michel was deputy mayor of Hokitika and a prominent lodge member. Mr. W. Chick 'l'he death has occurred of Mr. William Chick, aged 65, a resident of Danuevirke for the past 40 years, says a "Dominion” Special Service message. Born at Port Chalmers, he first practised dentistry in Hastings and later in Danuevirke. He was Hie pioneer dentist of soul hern Hawke’s Bay. Mr. Chick was keenly interested in sport'. He was a foundation member of the Danuevirke Bowling Club and the Rualiine Golf Club, and a member of tbe committee of the Danuevirke Racing Club. He is survived by a widow, one son, Mr. Royld Chick. Glengarry, and one daughter, .Mrs. C. McParlane, Wellington.
