PALMERSTON N„ November 12.

A tragedy was narrowly averted at Awahuri last night when a large sedan ear owned by Mr. E. F. A. I’ink, Palmerston North, which hail earlier been reported to the police as missing from where it was parked in the city, ran into a stationary ear outside the Awahuri Hall. Extensive damage was done to both vehicles. and four people were injured and sent by ambulance to the Palmerston North Hospital. It is understood that: the moving car turned a complete comersault after it struck the parked car, and its occupants were pinned underneath. Fire broke out after the collision, but. the intervention of bystanders prevented more serious consequences. Those injured were:— Mr. 11. Benge, railways inspector, Lower Hutt, fractured pelvis, injuries to back, badly shocked; condition serious.

-Mrs. Benge, Lower Hutt, his wife, lacerations to face and leg; condition satisfactory. Mr. D. J. Steele, grader driver, Public Works employee- at Palmerston North, lacerations to face and chest, slight shock; conditions fairly serious. Mr. T. Haunam, labourer, Palmerston North, fractured nose and jaw. slight concussion; condition fair. It is believed that Mr. ami Mrs. Benge were paying a visit to friends at Awahuri, and, finding them not at home, they sat in their ear waiting for them to arrive. At about. 10.30 p.m. a large car came round the corner, went off the road into loose metal and struck the stationary car on the driver’s side. ’Die moving car then turned over and imprisoned the occupants, who were rescued before tire which broke out could do much damage. Dr. W. M. Maclaurin attended the injured before they' were taken to the Palmerston North hospital by ambulance. They are reported to be making satisfactory progress. WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED Head Forced Through Windscreen By Telegraph—Press Association. - ASHBURTON, November 12. Injuries resulting in her being placed ou tiie seriously-ill list at the public hospital were received by Mrs. Lorna Ayres, aged 31, Christchurch, when M.e was thrown against the windscreen of a car, driven by’ her husband, which collided with a ear driven by Mr. J. Shearer, jnti., Winehmore. The accident. occurred at the north end of the Rkaia Bridge last evening.

Mrs. Ayres’s head was forced through the windscreen, a jagged piece of glass penetrating deeply into her throat. ’Three doctors and a nurse, who were ou tiie road, gave assistance. COLLISION WITH CAR Member Of Motor-Cycle Corps Killed By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, November 13. While motor-cycling with four companions, Mr. Ronald William Wilson, single, aged 24, who resided in Mcßride Street, South Dunedin, was killed on the Dunedin-Port Chalmers highway on Saturday evening. Mr. Wilson, a labourer by occupation. was a member of the motor-cycle corps of the Otago Regiment, and was leading his companions in single file in the direction of Dunedin. When lie was rounding a corner about, two miles from St. Leonard’s he collided with a motor-car travelling in tiie opposite direction. He received severe bead injuries and death was practically’ instantaneous. CAR AND TRAM COLLIDE A collision between a motor-car and a traincar at the Basin Reserve end of Kent Terrlice about 10 o’clock on Saturday night; resulted in Mrs. J. Mitchelk of 18 Toiara Crescent, Lower Hutt, who was travelling in the motorcar, being admitted to tiie Wellington Hospital with injuries to the right shoulder and severe shock. The car was extensively damaged. CARS COLLIDE NEAR MARTINBOROUGH Dominion Special Service. MASTERTON, November 13. Motor-ears driven by Mr. A. F. Smith, I’etone, ami Mr. E. I’. Norman, Khandallah, collided on a. narrow road at Gladstone, about, 10 miles from MartinborouglV this afternoon. Mrs. Asplet, mother-in-law of Mr. Smith, received injuries to an arm, which, however. did not necessitate her removal to hospital. A mudguard on each car was damaged.
