DESOLATE SCENES
Aftermath Of Flood In Patea County
SILT AND LANDSLIDES
Dominion Special Service
WANGANUI, November 8.
Almost total desolation reigns in the Waitotara and Makakaho I alleys, in the back country at the southern end of Patea County. The district bore the brunt of the rain that fell steadily over the North Island last week. The extent of the havoc wrought by flood, silt and landslides was partly revealed to Patea county officials yesterday and today when they toured the countiy under great difficulty. Fed by many tributary streams, the Waitotara River overflowed its banks and covered the valley road in many places within 20 miles of Waitotara township. Access to more distant parts of the valley and to Makakaho which follows a tributary ot the Makakaho River, has been made almost impossible by heavy deposits of silt, ollen three feet in depth, left on the road when the river subsided. Each tributary carried large quantities of eroded material washed down bv Hie continuous downpour. Silting was heaviest in the vicinity of junctions with the main Waitotara River.
