“Many people have asked me what is going to happen to the Christian Church in China if the Japanese conquer the country.” said the Rev. H. Davies, of the Canton Villages Mission, during an address at a Presbyterian missionary demonstration in Knox Church, Dunedin. “I do not think the Japanese will conquer China,” he said, “even though they may win the war. While the struggle is going on, away out in the Western provinces they are rebuilding China. The best brains have gone out there —(business .men, financiers and students —-and they are building new colleges, schools, highways and public buildings. The invaders maygain control of the Government of the coastal provinces,” he added, “and the organization of the Church may disappear ; it may lie years before the Presbyterian Church in China can hold another General Assembly; but. that does not mean that Che church will cease to exist. In its essence it i.s higher, deeper and broader than mere organization.”
