QUEEN ELIZABETH

The World’s Largest Ship

Tlie Queen Elizabeth, wliieli was launched recently, is 1031 ft. long. 135 ft. high front the keel to the top of the superstructure, 180 feet high to the top of the forward funnel, and 234 ft. to the masthead. When fitted she will have a gross tonnage of approximately 55.000. She lias fourteen decks, including the 724 ft. long promenade 'deck and is 118 ft. in breadth. Between her and tlie Queen Alary there are some interesting structural differences, the most striking of which is that the Queen Elizabeth lias only two funnels compared witli the three of” her predecessor, a change whieh allows a much more generous deck space and promenades, as well as I>assenger accommodation. She will have three anchors, as against two in the Queen Alary, and this lias necessitated a new shape of bow, with greater rake than Hie Queen Alary’s, to ensure that Hie anchor goes clear when manoeuvring. As a result tlie Queen Elizabeth will lie more Hi.-ui ten feet longer than Hie Queen .Mary. Another feature of tlie new ship is the absence of a break in tlie hull forward, known as Hie well 'deck, in favour of a flush main deck, resulting iu remarkably graceful lines from bow to bridge. Tliese changes result in an increase in Hie gross tonnage to 85,000. compared witli Hie Queen Mary’s 51.235 tons. Tlie ship lias inner and outer bottoms nearly six feet apart, with the intervening space divided into numerous watertight: comparements. Site lias accommodation for 2500 passengers, and will carry a crew of 1000.

Except for flic turbo-driven feed pumps nil Hie auxiliary machinery ielectrically driven. Four thousand miles of wire will be reuuire’d to run Hie energy Hirongh Hie ship; 30.000 lamps will be used. The Queen Elizabeth will make her maiden voyage iu 1940, and will bo put <ui Hie SouHiamptoiM.’lierbotirg-New York service.
