HAIL IN HAWKE’S BAY

Fruit Crops Affected

Dominion Special Service. HASTINGS, October 23.

A sharp hailstorm of about 30 minutes’ duration, followed, by a moderately heavy thunderstorm in central Hawke’s Bay early this afternoon caused fruitgrowers in the district some anxiety. The fall was more severe in some places than in others, but fortunately, although the hailstones were fairly large, they did not fall sufficiently hard to cause extensive damage. Reports from various fruitgrowers throughout the district indicate that, while early plums and any other fruit that was already set will be affected to some degree, most of the damage can be rectified by thinning.
