RESERVE AS FISHING HEADQUARTERS

Eastbourne Complaint

“The whole place is cluttered up and has been for years; let the fishermen put their gear somewhere where it cannot be seen from the road," said Cr. V. P. Haughton, at last night's Eastbourne Borough Council meeting when a complaint was read from residents of Marine Parade (J. Besant, G. A- Edwards, and A. Young), regarding the depositing of fishing materials on a reserve adjoining their properties. The complainants stated that there was a long-continued eyesore and nuisance on the reserve in the form of fishermen’s boats, oil drums, sacks, tarpaulins, crayfish pots, and other impedimenta. There ■was a nuisance in the deposition of fish in the reserve which was left for hours in the sun. A box of fish which was left on October 10 was still there next day at 11.30 a.m. Before the reserve was levelled all fishing activity was confined to the sea side of the reserve. Now the road side of the reserve was monopolised by fisherment to the exclusion of everyone else.

The mayor, Mr. E. W. Wise, said that, he thought there was some misunderstanding regarding the depositing of fish. What had probably occurred was that the fish was left there for a carrier to collect and he had not called.

Cr. Haughton said there were nets, crayfish pots, and boats all over the placeIt was decided to reply to the complainants stating that the allocation of an area for the fishermen would be considered.
