Morning Party Given For New Members
A delightful morning tea party was held yesterday, when the president and committee of the ■Wellington branch of the Victoria League entertained a number of new members at the league’s rooms. A pleasant informal atmosphere prevailed, and over a delicious tea new members were enabled to meet each other ami to chat with the committee about matters of interest to the league Two members who had recently’returned from abroad were also welcomed back. The committee room, with its green carpets and hangings, was arranged with comfortable lounge and chairs for the occasion, and bowls of vivid orange and yellow daisies were used as decoration. Guests were welcomed by Mrs. J. A. Doctor, president, who wore a suit of leaf brown triple silk, with matching jumper, and furs. Her hat was of brown bangkok straw trimmed with corded ribbon to tone. After an enjoyable social hour, Mrs. Doctor addressed the gathering. She extended a warm welcome to all new members, and expressed pleasure at having Mrs. Gamble and Miss N. Kendall among them again, Mrs. Gamble having been in England and Miss Kendall in the United States. Mrs. Doctor explained some of the aims and objects of the Victoria League. It was, she said, an. all-Empire society, and was non-political and non-sectarian in outlook. Loyalty to the Throne was the league symbol and the importance .of the body in helping to develop Empire unity was stressed. The speaker explained how Empire accord was helped by the children of one country corresponding with those of other countries. Such ideas fostered the right sentiments and encouraged cordial friendships. Mrs. Doctor concluded by outlining the work done by the various branches in encouraging new English settlers to make their homes here, and by telling of the wonderful hospitality which awaited New Zealand visitors to the Victoria League In England. Mrs. D. Rodie also spoke, pointing out the splendid opportunities which the league gave to young people going abroad from New Zealand. Through the organisation young people arriving In England were enabled to meet other young people from various parts of the Empire, and were given a most hospitable welcome by the Victoria League, which arranged many delightful entertainments for them. In this way the bonds of Empire were strengthened by the friendly contacts established by the league.
Mrs. Gamble spoke of the hospitality extended to her by the league in London while she was a visitor there. Those present were: Mrs. J. A. Doctor, Mrs. L. 0. H. Tripp, Mrs. A. A. Cramond, Mrs. C. E. Briggs, Mrs. H. R. Tlibmas, Mrs. M. I. Bunny, Miss P. Bunny, Mrs. Gerald Rosenbaum, Mrs. I. E. Wiltshire. Mrs. A. M. Garrard, Mrs. Gamble, Mrs. Hartley Ainslie, Mrs. E. H. Lawn, Mrs. A. M. Adams, Miss F. Penney, Miss R. E. Harvey, Miss N. Kendall, Miss I. Lockwood.
