GARDEN PARTY AT "OVERTON HOUSE"

Seatoun Branch Of Women's National Reserve

The funds of the Owen Street Residential Nursery, maintained by the Women’s National Reserve, benefited considerably from a recent successful garden party arranged by Mrs. A. D. Crawford, a’ member of the executive of the Women’s National Reserve and of the Seatoun branch.

Her Miramar home “Overton House” and its lovely precincts were thrown open by Mrs. Crawford, and there were more than 100 guests to explore and admire.

Spring flowers massed in bowls decorated the lounge, hall and drawingroom, and tapestry pictures, etchings and curios attracted attention. The house, which is covered in Virginian creeper, is set in the charming surroundings of an old-fashioned garden, which was at its best for the occasion, many lovely trees and flowers being in full bloom. Part of the lawns were set out with games, including a miniature golf course, for the entertainment of the guests, and afternoon tea was served outdoors as well. In a short speech Mrs. Crawford thanked all those who attended the garden party and spoke of the good work done by the members of the Seatoun branch.

Mrs. Porter, president of the Residential Nursery committee, spoke in appreciation of the generosity of Mrs. Crawford in giving the party. She also reminded those present of the fine work which had been accomplished by both Mrs. and the late Mr. Crawford, who had built and furnished the “Doll’s House,” disposed of by an art union which raised several thousands of pounds toward the funds of the Residential Nursery. The nursery, she said, was maintained by the Women’s National Reserve, for the care of tiny tots when the mothers were in hospital.

Mrs. Crawford was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, carried with musical honours. •

During the afternoon Miss Una Weller and three small pupils gave elocutionary items and songs were given by Mrs. Rossitor and Mrs. Coocutery, accompanied by Mr. Maddams. The four vice-presidents of the Seatoun branch of the Women’s National Reserve, Miss E. M. Freeman and Mesdames W. F. Pycroft, B. F. Gardiner and S. Stone, assisted Mrs. Crawford to entertain.
