COMBINED EFFORT

Collegiate Old Pupils 7

Annual Ball

Beautiful flowers in the schools’ colours decorated the ballroom and supper-room in fragrant profusion last night on the occasion of the annual dance of the Wellington branches of Woodford House Old Girls’ Association and Wanganui Collegiate School Old Boys’ Association at the Mayfair Cabaret,

White sweet peas, primulas and freesias combined with tall maroou tulips and primroses to carry out the colours of Woodford House. They were effectively arranged in dainty green troughs which flanked one side of the central ledge in the ballroom. On the other side the Wanganui school colours were represented with troughs filled with golden daffodils, freesias, yellow primulas and grape hyacinths. The front of the ledge was decorated half with maroon and white flowers and half with gold and blue flowers, while crimson and pink camellias were massed higher ou the ledge to form au effective background for these smaller rows of "blooms. White and pink camellias made a garland of colour at the base of the massed bowls of flowers.

The two-colour schemes were again used in decorating the ballroom itself. One side displayed the Woodford House colours and the Wanganui Collegiate school colours fluttered from the other side. Fringed streamers were placed around each alcove, and from the two big crystal chandeliers they radiated to the corners of the room, the maroon, aud white aud the blue, gold and black colours making distinct contrasts.' The respective school shields very much enlarged, held pride of place on the walls. Jars and bowls of flowering shrubs were also arranged on stands about the ballroom.

In the supperoom baskets and troughs of flowers again carried out the idea of the two sehpols’ colours. The tables “belonging” to the boys’ association were deeorated with big baskets of gold and blue flowers and ribbons in the same colours. The Woodford House “tables” also showed the school colours in the ribbons which stretched along the tables and in the troughs and baskets of fragrant flowers.

The combined committee who arranged the ball consisted of Mrs. J. C. Marchbanks, wearing a gown of black satin with corsage spray of scarlet; Mrs. G. Shirtcliffe, frock of white satin crepe, patterned in beige, green and orange; Mrs. Grant, trained gown of white, sashed in red; Mrs. H. J. H. Gilmer, rust taffeta, posy of red flowers at peck line; Miss Patricia • Greenfield-Brown, orchid mauve georgette frock with ruched bodice, under georgette redingcote of darker purple; Miss 8.. Hope Gibbons, cyclamen taffeta under full skirted overdress of blue sheer; and Messrs. Ronald Hunt, F. Harding, G. Shirtcliffe, T. Smith, 11. Gilmer, D. Daysh and B. Blundell. Guests included Mrs. J. C. Marchbanks, president of the Woodford ■House Old Girls’ Association, Wellington branch, accompanied by Mr. Marchbanks; Mr. P. B. Cooke, president of the Wanganui Collegiate School Old Boys’ Association, Wellington branch, who was accompanied by Mrs. Cooke, wearing a gown of white satin with a short coatee of black cobweb black lace; Colonel and Mrs. Cunningham and the Rev. and Mrs. N.
