JUNIOR MEN’S HOCKEY

Wellington Too Good For Canterbury Thirds

MARGIN OF ONE GOAL Although they won by only one goal to nil, Wellington junior men’s hockey representatives showed a definite superiority over a Canterbury third B grade team in a match at Karori Park on Saturday. During the greater part of the game Wellington had the advantage territorially, but the forwards could uot finish off their movements in the circle. The teams were :—

Wellington: Tempest, McWilliams, Deavoll, Ginders, E, Elgar, Boughey, ’Thomson, Dentiee, Scott, Vincent, McKelvey. Canterbury: B. Wheeler, B. Mitchell (captain), J. Hancock, J. C-ochrane, P. O’Brien (viee-eaptain), D. Allingham, A. Adcoek, D. White, L. Waters, IL Hurrell. F. Lee, Rain during the week had made the ground very heavy and players had difficulty in keeping their footing. 'l'his made coutrol of the ball difficult. The outstanding player on the field was the Canterbury goalkeeper, Wheeler, who savel brilliantly. Time and gain he stopped the ball from difficult angles. It was due to his work that Wellington did not score on several occasions. The Wellington centre-half, Elgar, and the right half, Boughey, both played well. The pick of the ■Wellington forwards were Scott and Vincent. Scott scored Wellington's only goal. Waters and Hurrell were prominent among the Canterbury forwards, and Mitchell, left back, played well. _ . The umpires were Messrs. M. Keys and W. G. Purves. PHILPOTT CUP Wellington Wesley Club Beats Masterton ! Wellington won the annual tournament for the Philpott Cup by beating Masterton 6-3 at Karori Park on Saturday afternoon. The cup w'as presented some years ago by a former Wellington and New Zealand hockey representative and a former member of the Wellington Wesley Hockey Club, Mr. R. Philpott, and his father, for competition between all the Wesley hockey clubs in New Zealand. Wellington and Masterton were the only challengers as the Wanganui, Christchurch, New Plymouth and .Auckland teams were unable to come to Wellington for the contest. The New Plymouth team won the cup last year, but had to forfeit the right to it as they were unable to take part on Saturday. The ground was very slippery and players had considerable difficulty in maintaining their balance, a factor which tended to slow up play. Wellington had the better of. the first spell, but in the second play evened considerably and toward the end of the glime only the effective work of the young Wellingtou goalkeeper, E. Dray, kept Masterton from scoring. The scoring was opened by the Mastertori right wing, C. L. Churchill, after about 20 minutes of up and down play. Wellington replied five minutes later, b. Arthur, at left wing, netting, and for some time play was concentrated around the Masterton goal. Following a breach the Wellington centre-forward, RM in tie, shot in from a penalty bully and netted again a few minutes later with a fast one that gave the goalkeeper little chance. Shortly after the resumption Arthur made an excellent run through to score his second goal for Wellington. C. H. Skuse, the Masterton left half, replies with a good shot from a melee in the Wellington circle. This was followed by a run by S. Brown, right inside, who took the* ball from about half-way to score Wellington's fifth goal. Fortunes flutcuated for some time until Iv. A. Steer, at centre-forward, scored Masterton’s third goal. The visitors pressed hard and were unlucky not to score again. After a period of strenuous defence Wellington rallied and took the ball to the other end of the field, where a good pass to H. Bunckenburg, who was moved from full-back to inside left at half-time, enabled him to score a splendid goal. Messrs. D. R. Hogan and S. T. Taylor were the umpires. Presentation Of Trophy The Philpott Cup was presented to the captain of the Wellington Wesley Hockey Club’s team, Mr. L. Bade, at a social held by the club at the Mayfair Cabaret, Wellington, o n Saturday evening. Making the .presentation, Mr. G. S. Chisholm, said there were mixed feelings as to who should have won the cup. The Masterton team showed a fine sporting spirit in their continued efforts to gain the cup. The score of 6-3 in Wellington’s favour did not quite show the run of the play, as the result was in doubt for some time. .Masterton were also unfortunate in not being able to field a team of full strength. Next year they would undoubtedly do better. Mr. Bade said that the result of the game was largely due to the fine work of the 'Wellington goalkeeper, E. Dray. Mr. Bade proposed the toast of “The Visitors.” The Rev. H. Skuse thanked the M ellington team for their hospitality. The Mnsterton team had put up a good showing in spite of the result, be said. The secretary of the Wellington chib, Mr. C. M. Smith, proposed the toast of “The Wellington Hockey. Referees’ Association.” Mr. 11. Kelly, replying, said the club could do a good deal to help and improve the referees’ association. It should always give the association its undivided support. He paid a tribute to the line reputation of the club and said that no player of the senior Wesley teams had ever been ordered off the field.

Air. G. Rouse proposed the toast of “Kindred Associations,” which was replied to by Mr. E, Latham.
