MAKARA COUNTY

Reduction In StreetLighting Charges

“SOMETHING COMING DOWN”

At its monthly meeting yesterday the Makara County Qouncil was advised by the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board that the board had decided to reduce charges of street lighting for 100 candle-power lamps. The object, the letter stated, was to do away with the 60 c.p. lamps, which in the board’s opinion were not suitable for street lighting under present traffic conditions, and to reduce the price of the 1.00 e.p. lamp so that the lowest lamp to be installed would be 100 c.p. The discount would remain the same. The letter was received, Cr. R. W. Bothamley remarking that it was pleasing to see that something was coming down instead of going up. The chairman, Cr. IS. Windley, presided, and there were also present Crs. V. Mexted, W. P. Hume, R. W. Bothandey, R. G. Mexted, S. G. Luxton, C. H. Phillips and J. Purchase, and Mr. H. Pickford, clerk. Centennial Exhibition. The secretary of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition, Mr. E. M. Bardsley, wrote stating that the executive appreciated the action of the council in agreeing to contribute £l4l as its share of the Wellington court at the exhibition. “The general response has been most gratifying,” he wrote, “and the aggregate of contributions received to date is approximately £lO,OOO. The executive is naturally encouraged by the support forthcoming.” Tawa Flat Reserve. The Tawa Flat Progressive and Ratepayers’ Association wrote stating that it had been informed that it was possible to obtain unemployed labour, with wages paid by the Government, for the purpose of improvement works in certain districts around Wellington. The letter asked that the council investigate the possibility of obtaining such labour to be employed in straightening the stream and clearing gorse in the reserve situated on Lyndhurst Road.

On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to inform ‘the association that the council could not accede to the request, but that it. would be referred to the committee of the council, who would inquire into it and report to the next meeting of the council. No. 13 Scheme Men. The district employment officer, Mr. E. Selman, advised that approval had been given for the continued employment by the council of 12 men for a further period of 26 weeks as from August 29 at a wage of 2/4 an hour. The additional commitment of £1456 must not be exceeded.

The clerk said the position would be eased by the start of seasonal occupations.

Cr. Luxton said he doubted whether these men would be tempted by seasonal occupations, as many of them thought they were better off as they were. The letter was received. (
