ISSUE FOR ELECTION
“Legislation In Interests Of People” CONTENTION OF MR. LEE The time had gone in New Zealand when the people could be deflected from a desire to vote for a party because that party had been charged with being Socialist, said the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Housing, Mr. J. A. Lee, speaking in the debate on the Imprest Supply Bill in tire House of Representatives last night. The attitude of the people, Mr. Lee said, to any piece of legislation would not be “Is this socialistic?” but “.Does this piece of legislation operate in the interests of the people of New Zealand?” And if the legislation operated in the interests of tire people then the verdict of the people would be accordingly. Mr. Lee 'said the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Adam Hamilton, got his inspiration from the leading articles written against Seddon away back in the 90’s. “Seddon went on to victory after victory by virtue of the success of those experiments, described truthfully, I believe, by the Press as socialistic,” (Mr. Lee said.
Referring to methods being adopted, as he said, to “puff up” the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Lee quoted extracts from an article entitled “The Leader of the Opposition Through a Woman’s Eyes.”
