Crown
Following other purchases in the neighbourhood, the Crown has acquired the well-known property in Sydney Street East known as Caulfield House, one of the largest boarding establishments in Wellington north. This property occupies the greater part of the frontagp to Sydney Street between the Tivoli Theatre and St. Paul’s Schoolroom.
Caulfield House is a two-story wooden building, with a large annexe. It is situated on a block of land having a frontage to Sydney Street of 126 ft. lin., by a depth of 116 ft. 2in. (irregular). It was purchased from the present owner and occupier, Dlrs. Edith Emily Dlaxwell. The purchase price has not been divulged; but the Government valuation was £9400. The main building contains 22 rooms, and the annexe 16 rooms. Only the annexe is being taken over by the Crown immediately. Caulfield House is to continue as a boardiug-house for another two years, Wore it actually passes into the hands of the Government.
