PAYMENT OF RATES
£lB,OOO Received In Four Days Wellington rate demands were issued last week and rates are now due for payment. Although there has been an increase in the demand for the current year, as compared with that for 1937-8, there are still those who like to get this debt to the city “off their minds” by paying promptly. That is just as well for the city's general account, as if every ratepayer postponed'payment of his dues until the end of the year, there might be an additional call for overdraft at the bank, which would mean a further burden on the city in interest. 1
. For the first week the response was up to the average. The demands were issued on August 8, 9. and 10. Leaving those three days out of the count altogether, the amounts received for the four succeeding days on which the collecting office was open, were as follows: £3272, £4612, £3895, £6336. _ These amounts total over £lB.OOO, which is considered satisfactory for the first few days. This average is' expected to be Improved upon in the immediate future.
