SITUATION OF HUTT VALLEY HOSPITAL

Four Sites Inspected

LOCAL BODY.AND BOARD

MEMBERS MEET-

Four properties were inspected by Wellington Hospital Board members yesterday in connection with the choice of 8 Hutt Valley (ipspital site. The board members were accompanied by the Director of the Hospitals Division, Dr. R. A. Shore; the assistant superintendent of Wellington Hospital, Dr. J. Cairney; the mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr. J. IV. Andrews; the mayor of Petone. Mr. G. London; the ma£or of Upper Hutt, Mr. I*. Robertson; the mayor of Eastbourne, Mr. E. W. Wise; the chairman of the Hutt 'bounty Council, Mr. S. Blackley ; and’ Mr. Ward Pearce, a member The site recommended by the building committee was inspected. This is Mr. G. Pearce’s L-shaped property of .13 acres with a 600-foot frontage to the Main Hutt Road near Nae Nae Lane and bordering at one 350 feet boundary on to Nae Nae Reserve and at another on to the houses in Pilmuir Street, This property is right on the main bus route. It is perfectly flat. The feature of another site inspected, that of the Pitt and the Ongley properties adjacent to the Nae Nae Convent and boys’ school, was the amount of sunshine it received and the magnificent view pi: Wellington harbour, the opposite western Hutt bills, and both ends of the Hutt Valley. This site is well served by arterial roads from all parts of the district the hospital would cater for. The main approach from the Hutt Road is by Nae Nae Lane, now narrow, but provision for the widening of which to full width already exists. This land, in contrast with the other properties seen, would require clearing, excavating, and proper bridge access over the Waiwetu Stream, which fronts it. The stream would lend itself to a scheme of beautification. A third site inspected was that on the foothills and flat at the end of Birdwood Rond, Waiwetu, part of the property once used as a whippet-racing track. ■ Two areas were inspected at White’s Line East, one fronting Mr. H. M. Hayward’s “Rato” property and adjoining the magnificent bush ■ reserve recently presented to the State by Mr. Hayward. The second was the Native land on the opposite side of the road, AH but Mr. Pearce’s property are foothills sites, that of the Ongley and Pitt blocks being at a higher elevation than the others., The decision as to a purchase will be further discussed at the building committee’s meeting'on Tuesday and at the full board meeting next Thursday.,
