Liberation Of Opossums
Sir, —We notice that the Wellington Acclimatisation Society (having been offered enticing terms by Manawatu trappers) is raising the question qf further liberation of opossums. It is to be hoped that all lovers of bird and bush will protest most vigorously against any such action.
We are the owners of a bush section some miles out of Wellington, and have abundant evidence of the depredations of opossums. Tim absence of bird life in our district is only too evident, and any efforts to encourage birds are largely nullified by these wretched vermin, who overnight rob'the bird-tables of any food that is put out.
The damage to bush, trees and shrubs is also very noticeable at this time of the year, while there are certain plants, such as roses, that it is impossible to grow in our garden, We would suggest that the acclimatisation societies have had a fair innings in the purposes for which they were formed and that their funds could now well be applied in combating imported pests as opossums and other animals.—We are, etc..
