TRAWLER DELAYED
Dispute Over Payment Of Overtime FIREMAN CLAIMS 5/6 Because of a dispute over the payment of overtime 'to a fireman, the steam trawler Futurist, owned' by New Zealand Fisheries, Ltd., which was to have left Wellington for the fishing grounds early this week, has not yetput to sea. The amount of overtime in question is 5/6. A protest was made against the non-payment of the overtime, and as a result of the difference no firemen were available to work the ship. So far only one of the three firemen required is available. Mr. R. S. Alward, one of the managing directors of the firm, said yesterday that the firemen were paid for two hours’ work at overtime rates from 5 a.m to 7 a.m., when preparing the trawler for §ea, but the man in question claimed for payment between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m., which was contrary to the award 1 , he claimed. In tlie House of Representatives yesterday Mr. S. G. Holland (Opposition, Christchurch North), gave notice to ask the Minister of Labour, “Whether he is aware that the fishing vessel Futurist has been held up this week? Will he make inquiries and inform the House whether the hold-up constitutes a strike, and, if so, what action does he propose to take?”
