Lloyd George Predicts War
(From "The Dominion," August 15, 1913.) Discussing the Finance Bill in the British House of Commons, Mr. Lloyd George, Chancellor of the Exchequer, said there was not the slightest prospect of any reduction in armaments; rather the reverse. The various countries were scaring each other into great expenditure, and there was no great public opinion in any country having tlie courage to tell those responsible for the expenditure tliat it must cease. He was confident Unit it: would lead to disaster, not perhaps to England, but tlie inevitable result would lie tlie goading of tlie people into a sort: of “resolutionary” protest against it. One country dared not stop the expenditure, but with international co-operation something might be done, especially when in the light of recent events in the Balkans it was fresh in people’s minds what a horrible thing war could be.
The Missouri Federation of Women’s Clubs lias started a crusade against, the split skirt. The federation is memorialising manufacturers throughout the country to refuse to manufacture such articles, and is also asking makers of dress pattern to modify the present extreme styles. Clergymen everywhere in the State are united in denouncing the pres-ent-day fashions.
