SHORTAGE OF HOUSES FOR RENTAL
Deputation To Mr. J. A. Lee Suggested
“My committee is desirous of bringing before the Government by means of a deputation the urgent necessity for a scheme of rental houses in the district,” wrote the secretary of the Upper Hutt School Committee to the Upper Hutt Borough Council last night in suggesting a joint deputation to the Parliamentary Undersecretary in charge of Housing, Mr. J. A. Lee.
The mayor, Mr. P. Robertson, said that when a deputation waited on Mr. Lee regarding houses he hail expressed himself in favour of helping those who helped themselves. The borough had secured a £lO,OOO loan for municipal housing. Since the council deputation met Mr. Leo there had been several notifications of land purchases but none of these had been at Upper Hutt. It was pointed out that a previous letter regarding the shortage of houses for married teachers had been referred to the Wellington Education Board. The council decided to write to Mr. Lee drawing his attention to the opinion he had expressed when its deputation met him.
