Experiences In Railway
Camps
BUILDINGS UNROOFED
By Telegraph —Press Association,
Blenheim, August 11. Most o£ the dozen launches driven ashore by the gale at Pieton are still aground awaiting a spring tide to refloat them. Damage in most cases is not serious. . Experiences at the South Main Ltu’ ll ' railway camps along the east coast disclose that the gale developed will) startling rapidity after a calm ing. At the single men s camp, known as Shand's, some .huts were tinned round and several were unroofed, fhe office and part of a fitting shop were unroofed and piles of timber were scattered far an'd wide. At Aniseed camp three huts weie blown almost apart, and many lost their roofs. Bedding was retrieved from the wrecked cottages, and accommodation for the night was provided m tne Y.M.C.A. building. . Nobody was seriously injured, but several people received cuts and bruises from living gravel, branches, and roofing iron. The newly-erected dental clinic was unroofed, and the overseers office was turned round an'd blown along until it struck the main office. All men capable of using carpenters tools, were engaged in repair work yesterday. The drafting surveyors office lost its roof, and the wind and rain caused havoc among maps, plans, and papers, .some of which were lost or severely damaged.
