GRAND NATIONAL HURDLES

Padishah Wins In Only Fourth Start Over Fences BIG UPSET IN PRINCIPAL FLAT RACE Beauford Steeplechase Won By Veteran Valpeen i By Telegraph—From The Watch eil CHRISTCHURCH, August 11. The win of a maiden hurdler, Padishah, in the Grand National Hurdle Race was the feature of the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting at Riccarton to-day.- It was only his fourth start over hurdles, but the public were well prepared for his victory because of A. E. Ellis taking the ride. ' i Ellis said after the race that except for jumping big and greenly at one or two fences, specially at the fence entering the straight the first time, his mount gave a good, safe display. He covered more ground than would be usual with a well-schooled horse in order to let him sight the fences well and also to get better going, and he had the race won a mile from home. “He only cantered home over the last fence,” said Ellis. z\ big upset occurred in the principal fiat race, the Islington Handicap, when the rank outsider, Cape Gabo came home with only £47/10/- invested on his winning chance. Araboa paid a handy price to win the other open race, the August Handicap. The Beaufort Steeplechase was won by the veteran Vaipeen, also ridden by A. E. Ellis.

• Except for the one upset, favourites and -well-backed horses had- a fair day, but there was again a decrease in the totalisator returns, although the usual large .off-day crowd attended. ■ The weather was fine, with a cool breeze from the south, but the going was ■ soft, and it did not suit several “expected” horses. The totalisator figures for the day were £44,590/10/-, compared with £48,931 10/- on the second day last year, a decrease of £4341. The total for the two days is £105,688, a decrease of £8429. Won All the Way. The Hunt Cup was won well all the way by Gold Wren, who divided favouritism with Nightbound, the public’s judgment proving sound. Gold Wren pulled hard nearly all the way. -Caballo took him on for nearly , t.wo miles, anti was then beaten, leaving Nightbound to make the final challenge. Nightbound never looked like getting to the leader until the closing stages on the flat, and Gold Wren just hung on too well. The rest were soundly, beaten, Tomcat running on to -take third from El Caballo, with Arctic Star and Bally Brit next. The winner gave a good exhibition. He has not raced -prior to this winter, and -both he and Nightbound will show improvement. Tidewaiter Decisively. The favourite, Tidewaiter, with track conditions in his favour, scored decisively in the Sumner Handicap. He was always well placed and, after the early leaders, Sparkle, Gleucos and Aymon, had had enough, Tidewaiter ran to the front and drew away. There was a close finish for the minor places between outsiders, Glenacre, Gold. Boy, and Nightdress being bunched. This trio all improved, but Nightdress was hampered by the going. Recollection and Autosweep were the beet of the others, the former coming from a good way back. Autosweep was very wide out round the. turn and into the straight.. Sparkle compounded completely, finishing last. The Trentham pair, Lustral and Sunbeam, were never dangerous. Popular Victory. Valpeen scored a popular victory in the Beauford Steeplechase, after a brilliant exhibition of jumping. The favourite, AU Irish, made most ot the running, w.th the others bunched, except Flashlight, who trailed behind by several lengths. Dunmure took on All Irish going into Cutts’s, and the field all bunched going down the back, 11 orest G-low running up into second place, while Flashlight made a faulty jump and dropped back again. Valpeen jumped into the lead over the Kennels double, -but was headed again by Sunward to the sod wall, where Flashlight, moving up, fell with All Irish. This left Sunward to lead over the top brush from Valpeen, Forest Glow, and Dunmure,. but Valpeen got up inside on terms with Sunward coming -to the last bend, and beat him home on the flat. They were a long way in front of Dunmure and Forest Glow. Nothing jumped like Valpeen, who thoroughly deserved his victory. All Irish jumped patchily, and Flashlight was not free from eoreness, although ne was apparently tfoing satisfactorily when he fell. Forest Glow looked likely down the back the last time, but he did not finish on. Favourites in Places. The public picked the Woolston Handicap the right way, the favourites finishing as backed. „ , Bady Leigh was almost left and I almyra was also very slow away. Gironde and Gay Lyric got out best .and made all the running, the others being headed by Half and Half. Second Innings, Night Hawk, Gay Hunting and The Sandwich Man. Gironde and Lady Lyric lasted till just after leaving the false rail, where Half and Half on the inner and Second Tunings drew away. In a stern struggle Second Innings lasted the better. There was a good gap to the others, TberMidor getting up on the post from Lady Rosette, Gironde, Gay Lyric, Gay Hunting. Lady Leigh, The Sandwich Man and Master T)i Tiff Ift. The "first pair outclassed the others, but Lady Leigh was unlucky. Gironde ran well and might improve. Sigurd ran a fair race for six furlongs. The biggest improver of the whole field is likely to be Lady Rosette, who came right from the .rear. Padishah’s Convincing Win. Padishah, ridden by A. E. Ellis, scored a very convincing win in the Grand National Hurdle Race, for which he was well backed. Ellis gave him a good sight of all the early fences and then settled down within striking distance of the leaders He went to the front round the home turn the last time, was dear over the last fence and won easily. Fireguard was unlucky enough to get caught in the tapes: at the start and he tailed the field for nearly two miles. He stayed on solidly to gain second place, but it did not look as if he would ever have troubled the winner, who was in a . class by himself. Clarion Call put up a very tine effort, although he failed to make history by ■winning the National double in the one year. He did not go at all well for the first mile or 10 furlongs, apparently getting into the second fence, and the going also hampered him, but he put in some good work over the concluding stages. In fact, at the two miles he had a royal chance. He drifted again, but surprisingly camo on at the finish to head Erination for third. Erination ran an excellent race; ne made ail the running and. although beaten a long way from home when Padishah ran past him, he fought on. None of the others had any chance, but Tnness Lad went well for two miles and Aurora’s Love for n mile ami three-quar-ters. Last Link fell after completing a round and Kilberis pulled up at the end of 10 furlongs after he had hit an early fence and drifted to the rear. The Surgeon Stays On. The Hack Hurdle Race was won solidly by the topweight. The Surgeon, who

stayed on too well for the outsiders, Sunny Comet and Tautau Maid. Top Rank looked likely again when he ran up near the front down the back, but over the concluding stages the first two horses drew right away and Top Rank faded, Tautau Maid getting third from the hack Corban and Mount Vai. Mount Vai mad) play in the middle stages but was gone a long way from home. The winner had run an excellent race in the Jumpers’ Flat the first day. Curie ran a bad race, his jumping being very poor. Grampian fell at the first fence and Wild Irishman broke his near hino leg on the flat going out of the straight. Outsider Scores. A rare surprise was sprung in the Islington Handicap by Cape Gabo, ridden by W. Broughton, who has a habit of bringing off long shot* at Riccarton. Cape Gabo was not prominent until the finish, when Liane, who had made all the pace with Supreme Court, was fighting out the issue with Willie Win. Liane hung on grimly against Willie Win, but Cape Gabo suddenly flashed up between them and won narrowly. Pukeko was a fair third, followed by Waitaka, Swordstick, Ned Cuttie, Balmenter and Sovereign Lady. It was a complete upset for backers, all three place-getters being fresh horses. The favourite, Ned Cuttie, had every chance, being tucked in behind the two pacemakers throughout, but he could finish only seventh. The MungatoonWaitaka bracket failed, although Waitaka ran a good race. Swordstick finished well from a bad last in the first mile of the journey. Pukeko ran in better style than the first day. Sovereign Lady was always in difficulties, but it may have been the track conditions. Araboa Finishes Solidly.

A. E. Didham repeated his first day’s performance by training and riding the winner ot the last race, this time Araboa. Araboa was drawn 16, but he began well and after Mittie bad rushed into the role of pacemaker he waw always well placed on the rails. Others in the pictute were Valmarch, Paper Slipper. Nightcalm. Land Raid, Debham and Ponty. Mittie was clear from the five furlongs and a half till well in the straight, where she was tackled b.v Paper Slipper, with Araboa coming through on the rails. Mittie fought off Paper Slipper, but Araboa finished on and then Land Raid, too, hung on. Araboa and Laud Raid drew clear and in a hard finish Araboa just won. Mittie was a fair third, with Ponty fourth, then Paper Slipper, Lady Montana, Great Pal and Silver Slipper. Araboa hung on in very solid fashion and is an improved horse. A lot of use was made of Mittie and she weakened nt the end. Land Raid and Ponty ran good races, but Paper Slipper again weakened. Nightcalm showed a lot of pace to the turn. Death of Great Hope. The race was marred by a fatal mishap to Great Hope, who was joint favourite with Mittie. When running in the bunch just after a furlong from the start he apparently dropped dead and Royal Gallant fell over him. The rid ere, 15. 11. Morris and G. R. Tattersail, escaped with a shaking.
