JAPAN MAKES SACRIFICES

Burden On All People Employees of rhe Finance Ministry in Japan are bearing the brunt of the campaign for small sacrifices of personal comfort and for saving which is being carried on in connection with the war.

One of the first virtuous resolutions adopted by this group of employees has been to refrain from wearing ties during the summer, the idea being that the ties will last longer when the wearing is resumed in colder weather. Coffee, black tea and fruit are to be barred from the dining rooms in the Finance Ministry as unnecessary luxuries. Holiday exchanges of gifts are to be abolished, and dinner parties are not to be held, except for greeting soldiers who are departing for the front.

String pressure is being brought on the employees to conform to severe saving standards, especially for single men, which have been worked out by the Ministry of Finance, which wishes to raise eight billion yen in popular savings in order to counterbalance the huge bond issues which are being floated for the prosecution of the war in China.

Single men with a monthly salary np to 50 yen are to save 10 per cent., those who receive up to 100 yen are to save 20 per cent., while persons who are paid 200 yen are supposed to set aside 30 per cent. The savings rates for employees with families are fixed at 1.5 per cent.. 3 per cent, and 5 per cent., depending on whether their salaries fall within the 50 yen, 100 yen or 200 yen categories. Japan’s smokers mus't also bear their share of war sacrifice. The hnporlation of the .American tobacco leaves, which were formerly blended with Japanese tobacco for the popular brands of cigarettes, has been stopped, and production of these brands has been cut down by 10 or 20 per cent. As a permanent ultimate remedy for this situation it is proposed to import American tobacco seeds and to plaiit then in some of the southern prefectures of Japan which are considere.l suitable for tobacco cultivation.
