RATE DEMANDS BEING SENT OUT
Captain Dawson Again First To Pay
Once again Captain J. E. Dawson, 13 Caroline Street, has been the first Wellington citizen to pay his rates, a distinction he has enjoyed for several years. Actually his payment was made even before some ratepayers had received their demands. The Wellington City Corporation’s demands are being issued this week. The first batch was posted on Monday afternoon; a further lot were sent out yesterday; and to-day the final batch will be dispatched. Everybody’s rates have gone up. The total increase of this year’s demand over that of the previous year is £18,652. The total demands for 193738 amounted to £586,842 and for 193839 the total is £605,494. Of the £18,652 increase in the total demand, less than half is represented bv the increase in the hospital rate. For the year 1937-38 the hospital rate demand was £76,743, and for the current financial year the demand amounts to £84,316, showing an increase of £7573. That increase, of course, has nothing to do with the major building scheme for a new hospital, which has been under discussion for the last two years or more.
